Fishing near Rockford, Illinois

Rockford lies within Winnebago County, Illinois. It works better as a base than as a bank. Running from near to far: Rock River at 0.4 miles to the south, Levings Lake at 2.2 miles, Windsor Lake at 5.1 miles to the north-east, Pierce Lake at 7.9 miles followed by County Lake at 13 miles to the east. Pierce Lake has a hard edge and little natural cover, so wind and light decide the day. Whether they freeze depends on the winter. A hard week rarely lasts long enough to matter. Built water dominates the choice here. Bank height changes how much of the water you can reach. On climate averages, local water clears around late March. Open records for Winnebago County list bluegill, smallmouth bass, johnny darter and common carp. Held water dominates the list, so expect hard banks and managed levels. If you only have a morning, take Rock River and leave the rest....
