A wet system passing over today, with a kind S breeze on the water and pressure sitting still. The productive water at Lac Gilmore will be around the seam between weed and open water. Little to get excited about, though the night holds a sliver of promise. Lower the pace and stay patient.

The Outaouais entry here is Lac Gilmore, in Quebec. It lies 161 metres above sea level. It runs to roughly 44 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. There is roughly 3.4 km of shoreline here, which is a short walk end to end. Few waters listed in Outaouais are bigger. Maniwaki at 2.3 km is the nearest place to stop. Saint-Boniface lies 13 km off, Saint-Raphaël another 15 km. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Reported across Outaouais: pumpkinseed, yellow perch, smallmouth bass, rainbow smelt and Iowa darter. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. Treat Lac Gilmore as a water to read rather than to cover.
Expect July to average close to 19°C, with January the cold end at about -13°C. The middle months are generous; the ends are demanding. Break-up comes around late April, and the run that follows is short and strong. The season between ice runs from about late April to late November. The weeks after the thaw and the ones before the freeze are the strongest. Lac Gilmore fishes to that pattern most years.
No access rule appears in what we hold. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. You will be walking about 880 m from the nearest car park. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Rules for this water may differ from the county norm. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. Lac Hall, 1.1 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Nothing here settles the position at Lac Gilmore for certain.
