A closed sky with even light today, with a stiffish breeze from the SSW with the glass holding level. The water to cover at Lac de la Montagne is the shallows early and the drop later. Make the night the heart of the trip. Fish tidy and take what the day gives. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Set in Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean, Quebec, this is Lac de la Montagne. Northern bush runs right down to the water. This is a pocket water of some 7 hectares, and every part of it is reachable from the bank. The nearest place of any size is Saint-Félicien, 25 km away. Saint-Prime lies 26 km off, Roberval another 29 km. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean records list northern pike, Atlantic salmon and lake whitefish among the fish reported. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. Work Lac de la Montagne in sections rather than trying to cover it.
On the long-term average, July reads 16°C and January reads -18°C. Winter owns most of the year at this latitude. The open season starts with the thaw, near enough early May. From about early May to around mid November, expect open water on the long-run figures. The weeks after the thaw and the ones before the freeze are the strongest. Expect Lac de la Montagne to follow that timing.
Whether you may fish here is not something records settle. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. Season dates differ by species, so read the table. Check whether bait restrictions apply before you buy any. Should this one be busy, Lac du Squatter is 0.7 km off. For Lac de la Montagne in particular, ask before you travel.
