Soft grey light all day today, with a decent SSW wind working the banks with the barometer flat. Expect most activity at Lac de l'Ouest around windblown banks where food collects. Make the night the heart of the trip. Fish tidy and take what the day gives. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Lac de l'Ouest is a Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean water, Quebec side. Height above sea level is 425 metres. Surface area runs to about 4 hectares — small enough to read in one session. The town to know is Saint-Félicien, 26 km out. Saint-Prime follows at 27 km, then Roberval at 31 km. Others close at hand: Lac du Hibou 0.7 km, 1.1 km away is Lac de Nuit, Lac Ciel 1.7 km, 1.7 km away is Lac Boisvert and Lac aux Huitres 1.8 km. This one is safely inside the county line.
There is no recorded depth, so work from what you can see. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. County-wide records name northern pike, Atlantic salmon and lake whitefish. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. Lac de l'Ouest fishes better once you know its edges.
July runs about 16°C on average, January about -18°C. Cold dominates the calendar on water this far north. Hard water holds through the cold months, breaking up near early May. On the long-run averages the water opens up around early May and starts locking again about mid November. Fish feed hardest at the start and the close of the open season. At Lac de l'Ouest the season follows that pattern closely.
Public sources are silent on who controls the bank. Nothing is mapped in the way of a ramp or car park within a short radius. Pike mean a wire trace, no exceptions; big spoons and jerkbaits do the searching. Where the road in crosses private land, ask first. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. Lac du Hibou, 0.7 km away, makes the obvious fallback. For Lac de l'Ouest in particular, ask before you travel.
