Poor visibility with fog on the water, with a light chop building from the NE with the glass holding level. Whatever swims in Gibson Lake should be near points where shallow meets deep. Not a day the forecast likes; the night keeps a flicker of interest. Lower the pace and stay patient. Biting air and slow fish: small baits, long pauses.

Gibson Lake sits within Peace River Regional District in British Columbia. The surface lies 1,133 metres up. At about 23 hectares, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. With about 1.8 km of edge, you can try several depths in one session. Tumbler Ridge is the closest town at 34 km. Further out sit Beaverlodge (83 km) and Dawson Creek (98 km). The nearest boundary is well away, so one set of rules covers the water.
We hold no survey for this water; read the slope of the shoreline instead. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Survey and observation records for Peace River Regional District include mountain whitefish, longnose sucker, largescale sucker, Arctic grayling and bull trout. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. Gibson Lake gives up its fish to patience rather than distance.
The warm month here averages 13°C; the cold one sits at -9°C. Winter closes the water for a while, and the reopening is worth catching. Break-up comes around late April, and the run that follows is short and strong. Expect the water usable from around late April until roughly mid November. Reckon on open water from spring through to late autumn, with May and June the strongest. It holds true on Gibson Lake more years than not.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Mapping shows no built access close by; expect to walk in from wherever you can leave the car. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Provincial rules still apply whatever the bank status. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. Should this one be busy, Footprint Lake is 2.4 km off. Check the position on Gibson Lake before loading the car.
