Clear overhead with good moonlight, with just enough SSW wind to ripple the surface with the barometer flat. Give bays that hold the day's warmth the first hour at Gap Lake. A stay-home graph, with the middle of the day as the one excuse to go. Downsize everything and pick the calmest water. The cold will pin fish to deeper, stable water.

Gap Lake is a Peace River Regional District water, in British Columbia. It sits in mixed forest. It runs to roughly 26 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. The full circuit measures close to 2.3 km on foot. Start from Tumbler Ridge, 38 km down the road. Kamloops is the closest city, 469 km away. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.
We hold no survey for this water; read the slope of the shoreline instead. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Fish documented in Peace River Regional District include mountain whitefish, longnose sucker, largescale sucker, Arctic grayling and bull trout. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. At Gap Lake light and wind decide more than tackle does.
Averages move between -9°C in January and 13°C in July. Cold locks it up for a good stretch each year. Hard water holds through the cold months, breaking up near late April. In an average year the thaw lands around late April and the freeze near mid November. The first weeks of open water and the last are the ones to plan for. On Gap Lake that shapes the whole year.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Nothing is mapped in the way of a ramp or car park within a short radius. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. Parking is often the real limit rather than the bank itself. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. Gibson Lake sits 4 km off and takes the overflow. What applies at Gap Lake may have changed since it was mapped.
