A grey, even sky over the water, with a whisper of wind from the SSW and steady pressure. Most of the action on Lac Zeno should come off windblown banks where food collects. A slow day overall; the evening is the best of a quiet lot. Lower the pace and stay patient. The season of moving fish: stay mobile and watch for bait.

Lac Zeno is listed under Outaouais, Quebec. Height above sea level is 306 metres. Surface area runs to about 10 hectares — small enough to read in one session. The full circuit measures close to 2.0 km on foot. The nearest place of any size is Saint-Boniface, 40 km away. Further out sit Maniwaki (42 km) and Saint-Raphaël (44 km). No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Public occurrence data for Outaouais names pumpkinseed, yellow perch, smallmouth bass, rainbow smelt and Iowa darter. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. At Lac Zeno the water rewards a slow, careful approach.
Averages move between -15°C in January and 18°C in July. The freeze arrives properly here and holds. Ice-out usually falls in late April, and the weeks after it fish hardest. Ice clears near late April and comes back about late November in a typical year. From the thaw to midsummer the fishing improves week by week. The season on Lac Zeno rarely departs from it.
Public sources are silent on who controls the bank. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Nothing formal is recorded here: no ramp, no car park, no marked path. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Parking is often the real limit rather than the bank itself. Some water is controlled locally without a sign saying so. Lac Oliver at 0.9 km is the sensible second choice. None of that is settled for Lac Zeno in what we hold.
