Dull, settled light over the water, with just enough SSW wind to ripple the surface with the barometer flat. Fish at Lac Vulcan should hold close to the shaded margin through bright spells. Expectations low today; if anything moves, it will be in the evening. One good spot fished well beats five fished quickly.

This water sits in Outaouais, Quebec. It sits at 332 metres above sea level. Roughly 12 hectares: a morning covers one end, an afternoon the other. The whole outline is near 1.8 km, and most of it is walkable. Saint-Boniface is the closest town at 40 km. The nearest city of size is Gatineau, 127 km away. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
The records we hold are silent on depth, so plan to find it yourself. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Species logged across Outaouais include pumpkinseed, yellow perch, smallmouth bass and rainbow smelt. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. Take Lac Vulcan a stretch at a time.
The range across the year is -15°C to 18°C. The freeze arrives properly here and holds. Break-up comes around late April, and the run that follows is short and strong. On average, late April opens the water and late November closes it again. May into June fishes hardest, and September gives a second good stretch before the lid returns. It holds true on Lac Vulcan more years than not.
Our records carry no access rule either way. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. No car park, ramp or path is recorded within easy reach of the shore. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Parking space is the usual limit rather than the bank itself. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. Lac Oliver at 1 km is the sensible second choice. What applies at Lac Vulcan may have changed since it was mapped.
