A grey, even sky over the water, with stillness over the whole water and pressure sitting still. On Lac Vermillon, work any hard bottom among the soft first. Save your energy for the night. Work the productive water thoroughly. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Lac Vermillon is set in Capitale-Nationale, Quebec. This is rolling bush ground. At about 34 hectares, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. Around 4.2 km of margin, front to back. On our Capitale-Nationale list it sits near the top for size. Supplies mean a trip to Laurentides, 17 km off. La Tuque is 37 km and Sainte-Thècle 53 km. The nearest edge is a long way off, so local rules apply throughout.
Depth is unmeasured here, so let the shoreline guide you. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Records held for Capitale-Nationale cover lake sturgeon, Atlantic sturgeon and longnose sucker. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. Take Lac Vermillon a stretch at a time.
In an average year July sits at 17°C and January at -15°C. Winter closes the water for a while, and the reopening is worth catching. Hard cover is dependable here; it goes around late April. Averages suggest open water from about late April through to roughly late November. Spring is short and heavy here; autumn is longer and steadier. Anyone fishing Lac Vermillon regularly works to that calendar.
Nothing in our records says who may fish here. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. No launch point is recorded nearby, so this is a bank water unless you carry a boat in. For walleye, a jig and minnow near the bottom is the standard; evenings beat middays. Check whether a boat is allowed before you tow one. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. Failing this one, try Lac Sarault, 1.1 km away. Check the position on Lac Vermillon before loading the car.
