Cloud from horizon to horizon today, with the water lying quiet and no real change in pressure. Start the search at Lac Loranger along shallow cover and weed edges. The numbers single out the night. Cover water early, then settle where the signs are. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

Set in Capitale-Nationale, Quebec, this is Lac Loranger. The surroundings are rolling bush. The whole thing is a single swim; walk it in a minute. On size it sits at the modest end of our Capitale-Nationale list. The closest town, Laurentides, is 18 km distant. La Tuque is 35 km and Sainte-Thècle 53 km. Water in the same corner: Lac du Cerf 0.9 km, Lac Jean 1.2 km off, Lac du Poste 1.3 km, Lac du Hobby 1.5 km off and Lac des Agrions 1.7 km. Rules here are straightforward: one set of provincial rules.
We hold no depth figure for this one. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Records held for Capitale-Nationale cover lake sturgeon, Atlantic sturgeon, longnose sucker and sauger. Protected fish appear in the records for this area, so treat the list as information, not an invitation. Lac Loranger fishes better once you know its edges.
Averages here run 17°C at the top of summer and -15°C at the bottom of winter. A hard winter is normal, and the thaw brings a strong few weeks. Once it clears, about late April, the fishing comes on quickly. Going by climate averages, expect open water from about late April until roughly late November. The open run goes from the thaw to the freeze, and April through October covers most of it. The season on Lac Loranger follows the weather closely.
Whether you may fish here is not something records settle. The water borders Réserve faunique de Portneuf, so expect the reserve rules to apply. For walleye, a jig and minnow near the bottom is the standard; evenings beat middays. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. Should this one be busy, Lac du Cerf is 0.9 km off. Treat access at Lac Loranger as something to verify.
