Solid cloud cover today, with air barely moving with a settled glass. Fish at Lac Pyla should hold close to any hard bottom among the soft. Little to get excited about, though the night holds a sliver of promise. Lower the pace and stay patient. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

Set in Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Quebec, this is Lac Pyla. The surface lies 346 metres up. Small enough that any disturbance crosses the whole surface. Most waters listed here for Abitibi-Témiscamingue are larger. Val-d'Or sits 59 km from here and is the nearest stop. Malartic follows at 73 km, then Senneterre at 94 km. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.
Depth here is unknown, so count the lead down before committing. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Abitibi-Témiscamingue records list northern pike, yellow perch, walleye and white sucker among the fish reported. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. The near bank of Lac Pyla is often the one people ignore.
Climate normals give 17°C for July and -15°C for January. Fishing here follows the temperature more than the calendar. Hard cover is dependable here; it goes around early May. On the long-run averages the water opens up around early May and starts locking again about late November. The strongest runs come at either end of the open season. Time your trip to Lac Pyla by conditions rather than dates.
No access rule appears in what we hold. There is no recorded infrastructure here; expect to find your own way in. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. For a change of water, Lac Montech is 1 km distant. Where Lac Pyla is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
