Flat light and a covered sky today, with a whisper of wind from the ENE with the glass holding level. Most of the action on Lac Headwind should come off points where shallow meets deep. The productive run goes the day. Start on the obvious water and expand from there. A properly cold day, so expect slow, deliberate fishing.

In Quebec, Lac Headwind belongs to Centre-du-Québec. The ground around here is northern bush. It covers about 15.44 sq km, which means weather matters as much as tactics. Around 52 km of margin, so directions matter more than a general plan. It ranks among the bigger water on our Quebec list. Nearest place of any size is Puvirnituq, 168 km away. After that come Salluit at 196 km and Inukjuak at 312 km. No boundary runs near, so the local rules hold throughout.
There is no recorded depth, so work from what you can see. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Across Centre-du-Québec, recorded fish include brook trout, northern pike and lake chub. Records at this level tell you what is in the area. The shape of Lac Headwind rewards a slow walk along one bank.
Between January at about -25°C and July at about 11°C, the water has a wide range to work through. The freeze holds for the better part of the year. After mid June the shallows warm and the fish move up. The open-water window runs from around mid June to about mid October in an average year. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. That is the shape of the year on Lac Headwind.
Public sources are silent on who controls the bank. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. No slipway, car park or made path shows up nearby in mapping, so treat access as rough. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. For a change of water, Lac Calme is 9.7 km distant. Check the current arrangement for Lac Headwind.
