A grey, even sky over the water, with a firm SSW blow and pressure going nowhere. Fish at Lac Bas should hold close to inflow corners and shaded margins. The night should out-fish the rest of the day. Take the steady approach over the searching one. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

Quebec holds Lac Bas, in Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean. Height above sea level is 400 metres. It measures about 14 hectares, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. Roughly 2.1 km of bank means you can walk to a fresh area when one goes quiet. Saint-Félicien at 23 km is the nearest place to stop. After that come Saint-Prime at 25 km and Roberval at 30 km. The nearest boundary is well away, so one set of rules covers the water.
Depth remains unrecorded, so treat the first session as a survey. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Open biodiversity records for Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean list northern pike, Atlantic salmon and lake whitefish. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. Take Lac Bas a stretch at a time.
Long-term averages put July at about 16°C and January near -18°C. Long winters and short summers set the pattern. Look for the thaw near early May; the fishing lifts straight after. Ice clears near early May and comes back about mid November in a typical year. From the thaw to midsummer the fishing improves week by week. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Lac Bas.
Our records carry no access rule either way. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Mapping is blank for access, so scout the approach before committing the car. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. Ask in the nearest town if you are unsure. Keep proof of licence with you rather than in the car. Lac Jos-Brassard sits 1.8 km off and takes the overflow. For Lac Bas in particular, ask before you travel.
