A still, cloudless night on the water, with an easy breeze from the NE and steady pressure. Fish at Racecourse Lake should hold close to bays that hold the day's warmth. The night carries the best of the day. Make the first hour count and build on it. Pre-summer fish are feeding up and mobile.

Racecourse Lake sits in Gannawarra, out in Victoria. The bank is 72 metres above sea level. Surface area runs to roughly 2.18 sq km, so plan for one area rather than the whole. Shoreline length is close to 7.5 km, and each section fishes a little differently. The closest town, Kerang, is 18 km distant. Barham is 31 km and Swan Hill 37 km. There is no boundary nearby to worry about.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Public wildlife records from this area list common carp, perch and golden perch. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. Racecourse Lake gives up more to patience than to distance.
Expect February to average close to 24°C, with July the cold end at about 9°C. Warmth runs the whole year, so timing is about the hour, not the month. Levels swing with the wet season, which moves the fishing about. Spring, September into November, fishes hardest, with autumn a close second. Anyone fishing Racecourse Lake regularly works to that calendar.
We hold no note on access for this one. The nearest mapped parking is 1.1 km away, so the last stretch is on foot. Picnic facilities are recorded some 1.1 km out. For the carp, bait a margin spot and sit on it; corn and bread still work. A phone call first saves an afternoon. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. If the gate is shut, Kangaroo Lake at 3.2 km is the nearest alternative. Rules at Racecourse Lake are worth checking on the day.
