A crisp, open sky after dark, with a light NE breeze with the glass holding level. Give sheltered bays and points the first hour at Cranes Lake. The night is where the day comes good. Make the first hour count and build on it. Rising water temperatures are moving fish shallower by the week.

Victoria holds Cranes Lake, in Gannawarra. It stands 70 metres above sea level. It runs to roughly 41 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. There is roughly 2.5 km of shoreline here, which is a short walk end to end. Kerang at 13 km is the nearest place to stop. Barham is 28 km and Cohuna 40 km. Rules here are straightforward: one set of state rules.
Depth went unrecorded, which puts the reading back on you. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Public wildlife records from this area list common carp, perch, golden perch, Murray cod and silver perch. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. At Cranes Lake the water rewards a slow, careful approach.
Long-run averages give February about 24°C and July about 9°C. The water stays warm and open throughout. Winter here is cool and quiet, and often the most comfortable time out. Early spring brings the water on quickly here. Expect Cranes Lake to follow that timing. The first warm week of the year changes everything here.
Whether you may fish here is not something records settle. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Parking is mapped about 520 m from the bank. Cranes Lake Bushland Reserve covers this ground, which means extra rules to check. Carp respond to sweetcorn or boilies fished patiently on the bottom near feeding areas. Where the road in crosses private land, ask first. Check whether bait restrictions apply before you buy any. Duck Lake, 2.4 km away, makes the obvious fallback.
