Full sun on the water today, with a whisper of wind from the N as pressure builds. Whatever swims in Lake Sam should be near the margins and the shelf beyond them. A long productive spell runs morning through afternoon. Make the first hour count and build on it. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

Out in Perry County, Alabama, sits Lake Sam. Beyond the shoreline you have dry hill. About 19 acres of surface, which puts the far bank inside easy sight. The closest town, Marion, is 4.7 miles distant. For a city, Tuscaloosa is 45 miles off. Also worth knowing: Lake Rhoda at 0.2 miles, Lake Vida a shade over 0.2 miles, Lake Hugh at 0.2 miles, Lake Nett a shade over 0.5 miles and Lake Doris at 0.6 miles. It sits well inside its county, with no border complications.
Depth figures are not published for this one. Points where the flooded channel swings in are the reliable ones. Draw-down through summer strips the margins, so follow the water out. Fish reported in the area, according to open records, include backwater darter, blackbanded darter and bluegill. Presence in the area does not guarantee a fish on the day. Fish Lake Sam where the bottom changes rather than where it looks deep.
Average temperature peaks around 81°F in July and bottoms out near 45°F in January. The awkward stretch is midsummer, not midwinter. Spring and autumn carry the fishing; summer squeezes it into the edges of the day. The cooler months are the comfortable ones to fish here. Expect Lake Sam to follow that timing.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Mapping shows no built access close by; expect to walk in from wherever you can leave the car. Bluegill and other panfish take small jigs or worms under a float near any cover. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. The nearest alternative is Lake Rhoda, 0.2 miles out. Where Lake Sam is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
