Solid cloud cover today, with a useful SSW wind pushing food about and pressure sitting still. Most of the action on Lac Xavier should come off shallow cover and weed edges. Make the night the heart of the trip. Make the first hour count and build on it. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Look for Lac Xavier in the Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean part of Quebec. The country here is boreal forest. About 5 hectares of surface, which puts the far bank inside easy sight. Métabetchouan is the closest town at 24 km. After that come Chambord at 27 km and Desbiens at 31 km. The nearest boundary is well away, so one set of rules covers the water.
The records we hold are silent on depth, so plan to find it yourself. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Survey and observation records for Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean include northern pike, Atlantic salmon, lake whitefish and fallfish. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. Fish Lac Xavier where the bottom changes rather than where it looks deep.
The year swings from about -17°C in January to roughly 17°C in July. A short, intense season is the rule this far north. Count on hard cover from midwinter, and open water from early May. Ice usually gives way near early May, and forms again about mid November. Look to early summer and the first cool weeks of autumn. Lac Xavier fishes to that pattern most years.
Public data does not answer the access question here. No car park, ramp or path is recorded within easy reach of the shore. Pike mean a wire trace, no exceptions; big spoons and jerkbaits do the searching. Rules differ from one water to the next round here. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. The nearest alternative is Lac a Grand-Pit, 2 km out. The position on Lac Xavier is worth confirming on the day.
