An even grey lid over the water, with air barely moving and steady pressure. The productive water at Lac Saphir will be around the first drop-off and weed lines. The morning is where the day comes good. A careful, quiet approach will out-fish a busy one. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

You will find Lac Saphir in Capitale-Nationale, Quebec. The bank is 369 metres above sea level. It covers about 4 hectares, so this is small water you can walk round in under an hour. For supplies, Laurentides is 12 km out. Sainte-Foy is the closest city, 91 km away. Other water within reach: Lac Bouchard within 0.7 km, 1.2 km out stands Lac Sapin, Lac Vert within 1.3 km, 1.6 km out stands Lac de la Daraise and Lac Leroy within 1.6 km. One jurisdiction covers this water end to end.
Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Species logged across Capitale-Nationale include lake sturgeon, Atlantic sturgeon and longnose sucker. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. On Lac Saphir the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
Long-term averages put July at about 18°C and January near -15°C. Cold winters and warm summers give a wide working range. The open season starts with the thaw, near enough late April. Averages suggest open water from about late April through to roughly late November. The strong weeks are the first after break-up and the last before the freeze. At Lac Saphir the season follows that pattern closely.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. Omble de fontaine is mapped as a fishing spot 690 m from the water. For walleye, a jig and minnow near the bottom is the standard; evenings beat middays. Bank access can be seasonal on ground like this. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. Lac Bouchard at 0.7 km is the sensible second choice. Rules at Lac Saphir are worth checking on the day.
