Open sky and sharp air tonight, with a soft NW wind with the barometer flat. Give structure within a cast of the bank the first hour at Lac Poulin. A hard day on paper; the night edges the rest. Scale down and fish slowly. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

The Capitale-Nationale end of Quebec holds Lac Poulin. The setting is mixed forest. Surface area runs to about 2 hectares — small enough to read in one session. Our Capitale-Nationale list holds plenty of bigger water. Laurentides lies 21 km from the water. Sainte-Foy sits 69 km out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. A county line runs close by, so local bylaws can differ within a short drive.
Depth is not on record here, so the bank has to tell you. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Fish documented in Capitale-Nationale include lake sturgeon, Atlantic sturgeon and longnose sucker. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. On Lac Poulin the quiet end is the one worth the extra effort.
The warm month here averages 18°C; the cold one sits at -14°C. A hard winter is normal, and the thaw brings a strong few weeks. Firm cover through the cold months, then open water from late April. Average temperatures cross freezing around late April in spring and again near late November in autumn. The open run goes from the thaw to the freeze, and April through October covers most of it. Time your trip to Lac Poulin by conditions rather than dates.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. A campsite lies 610 m away for anyone staying over. There are toilets mapped about 620 m away. Walleye come to jigs worked slow near bottom, and to trolled crankbaits along the drops at dusk. Provincial rules still apply whatever the bank status. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. Lac Herve at 0.6 km is the sensible second choice. Ask locally about Lac Poulin if anything is unclear.
