Overcast skies today, with a mirror surface most of the day with the barometer flat. Activity on Lac Fraser should centre on reed fringes and open pockets. Make the night the heart of the trip. Fish tidy and take what the day gives. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Lac Fraser falls in Mauricie, part of Quebec. Elevation runs to 416 metres. It measures some 2.22 sq km, and wind has room to build across it. There is roughly 21 km of bank, more than one visit can cover properly. On our Mauricie list it sits near the top for size. The closest town, Leblanc, is 41 km distant. Weymontachie is 94 km away, with Chapais at 132 km. The nearest boundary is a fair way off.
Depth here is unknown, so count the lead down before committing. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. County-wide records name northern pike, brook trout, walleye, yellow perch and white sucker. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. At Lac Fraser light and wind decide more than tackle does.
The warmest month averages 16°C, the coldest about -18°C. Open water is the exception rather than the rule here. Hard water holds through the cold months, breaking up near early May. On average, early May opens the water and mid November closes it again. The open run goes from the thaw to the freeze, and April through October covers most of it. The season on Lac Fraser rarely departs from it.
There is no clear statement anywhere on who can fish it. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Mapping records no facilities at all near this water. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. Keep proof of licence with you rather than in the car. For a change of water, Lac du Trappeur is 1.8 km distant. Check the position on Lac Fraser before loading the car.
