No direct sun expected today, with a working SSW breeze with a settled glass. The water to cover at Lac Estillac is windblown banks where food collects. A stay-home graph, with the night as the one excuse to go. Save the long walk for a better forecast. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Lac Estillac is one of the Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean waters in Quebec. Around the bank it is taiga. This is a pocket water of some 10 hectares, and every part of it is reachable from the bank. The full circuit measures close to 2.6 km on foot. Normandin is the closest place, 30 km off. The nearest city of size is Saguenay, 142 km away. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Open biodiversity records for Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean list northern pike, Atlantic salmon, lake whitefish and fallfish. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. Lac Estillac gives up its fish to patience rather than distance.
In an average year July sits at 16°C and January at -18°C. The freeze holds for the better part of the year. Ice fishing carries the winter, and the water opens about early May. Ice usually gives way near early May, and forms again about mid November. The strong weeks are the first after break-up and the last before the freeze. The season on Lac Estillac rarely departs from it.
Access is not recorded for this water. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. There is no mapped parking or launch close by, which usually means walking in. Pike mean a wire trace, no exceptions; big spoons and jerkbaits do the searching. Where a permit is needed, the nearest town usually sells it. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. Lac Flety, 0.9 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Where Lac Estillac is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
