Flat light and a covered sky today, with stillness over the whole water and pressure sitting still. Give reed fringes and open pockets the first hour at Lac du Gros. The night is where the day comes good. Make the first hour count and build on it. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Look for Lac du Gros in Mauricie, Quebec. It lies 532 metres above sea level. This is a pocket water of some 5 hectares, and every part of it is reachable from the bank. By elevation it is in the upper part of our Quebec listings. The nearest town is Weymontachie, 38 km away. Saguenay sits 188 km out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. This one is safely inside the county line.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Mauricie records list northern pike, brook trout, walleye and yellow perch among the fish reported. Take it as the county picture rather than a promise for this water. Lac du Gros gives up its fish to patience rather than distance.
Expect July to average close to 16°C, with January the cold end at about -18°C. Everything is compressed into the middle of the year. The lid usually goes in early May, which opens the strongest weeks of the year. The season between ice runs from about early May to mid November. Fishing peaks soon after break-up and again before the cold returns. That is the shape of the year on Lac du Gros.
Access status is simply unknown for this water. Nothing is listed nearby for parking or launching a boat. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. Lac Polichinelle sits 0.8 km off and takes the overflow. Nothing on Lac du Gros should be assumed from this page alone.
