Soft grey light all day today, with a gentle ripple from the SSW with the barometer flat. Expect most activity at Lac de la Tranchee around sheltered bays and points. Everything points to the night. Take the steady approach over the searching one. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Lac de la Tranchee sits within Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean in Quebec. Elevation runs to 375 metres. Surface area is around 18 hectares, which gives you real water without needing a boat. A shoreline of some 2.8 km keeps the choices simple. The town to know is Chibougamau, 96 km out. Further out sit Normandin (97 km) and Albanel (101 km). It sits well inside its county, with no border complications.
Depth is not on record here, so the bank has to tell you. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Reported across Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean: northern pike, Atlantic salmon, lake whitefish and fallfish. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. Treat Lac de la Tranchee as a water to read rather than to cover.
Averages move between -18°C in January and 16°C in July. The year here is short and sharp: a long lid, then a burst of open water. Hard cover is dependable here; it goes around early May. On average, early May opens the water and mid November closes it again. The weeks after the thaw and the ones before the freeze are the strongest. Lac de la Tranchee fishes to that pattern most years.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. No car park, ramp or path is recorded within easy reach of the shore. Pike mean a wire trace, no exceptions; big spoons and jerkbaits do the searching. Bank access can be seasonal on ground like this. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. Lac Goux at 0.8 km is the sensible second choice. Nothing on Lac de la Tranchee should be assumed from this page alone.
