Cloud from horizon to horizon today, with a light SSW breeze and pressure going nowhere. Fish at Lac Cairon should hold close to the seam between weed and open water. The day peaks in the night. Work fewer spots, but work them properly. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Set in Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean, Quebec, this is Lac Cairon. The bank is 382 metres above sea level. Small at around 3 hectares: two anglers spread out cover most of it. On size it sits at the modest end of our Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean list. Supplies mean a trip to Chibougamau, 96 km off. It is 216 km to Saguenay, the nearest city. Rules here are straightforward: one set of provincial rules.
We hold no depth figure for this one. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Reported across Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean: northern pike, Atlantic salmon and lake whitefish. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. Lac Cairon fishes better once you know its edges.
The year swings from about -18°C in January to roughly 16°C in July. Cold dominates the calendar on water this far north. Hard cover is dependable here; it goes around early May. The water is typically free of ice between early May and mid November. Fish feed hardest at the start and the close of the open season. Time your trip to Lac Cairon by conditions rather than dates.
Nothing in our records says who may fish here. Nothing is mapped in the way of a ramp or car park within a short radius. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. Lac Arlequin sits 0.5 km off and takes the overflow. Check the current arrangement for Lac Cairon.
