An even grey lid over the water, with mild air moving in from the SE and pressure going nowhere. On Lac Courval, work points where shallow meets deep first. The numbers single out the morning. Fish confidently and change only when the bites stop. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

Set in Capitale-Nationale, Lac Courval is a Quebec water. The ground round it is pine and birch. At about 10 hectares, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. Around 1.5 km of margin, front to back. The nearest place of any size is Laurentides, 10 km away. Further out sit Saint-Raymond (34 km) and Saint-Ubalde (35 km). Rules here are straightforward: one set of provincial rules.
Depth remains unrecorded, so treat the first session as a survey. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Capitale-Nationale records list lake sturgeon, Atlantic sturgeon, longnose sucker, sauger and channel catfish among the fish reported. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. The shape of Lac Courval rewards a slow walk along one bank.
Temperature averages peak at 18°C in July and bottom out at -15°C in January. Four clear seasons, with a proper winter at one end. Break-up comes around late April, and the run that follows is short and strong. From about late April to around late November, expect open water on the long-run figures. From the thaw to midsummer the fishing improves week by week. That is the shape of the year on Lac Courval.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. There is no mapped parking or launch close by, which usually means walking in. For walleye, a jig and minnow near the bottom is the standard; evenings beat middays. Bank access can be seasonal on ground like this. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. Lac des Mousses sits 1.1 km off and takes the overflow. What applies at Lac Courval may have changed since it was mapped.
