Dull, settled light over the water, with mild air moving in from the SE with the glass holding level. The fish at Lac a Charles are likely to sit near the margins and the shelf beyond them. Make the morning the heart of the trip. Ride the conditions while they last. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

Look for Lac a Charles in Capitale-Nationale, Quebec. The bank is 319 metres above sea level. At about 24 hectares, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. The bank runs about 3.1 km all the way round, so one visit can cover most of it. Size puts it in the front rank of our Capitale-Nationale list. Start from Laurentides, 12 km down the road. The big place round here is Sainte-Foy, 76 km distant. A county line runs close by, so local bylaws can differ within a short drive.
Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Species logged across Capitale-Nationale include lake sturgeon, Atlantic sturgeon, longnose sucker and sauger. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. Anyone new to Lac a Charles should walk it once before setting up.
July is the warm end of the year here, averaging about 18°C, while January sits near -15°C. Cold locks it up for a good stretch each year. Firm cover through the cold months, then open water from late April. The lid tends to go about late April and return around late November. Fish feed hardest at the start and the close of the open season. Lac a Charles fishes to that pattern most years.
Access status is simply unknown for this water. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. No car park, ramp or path is recorded within easy reach of the shore. For walleye, a jig and minnow near the bottom is the standard; evenings beat middays. A phone call first saves an afternoon. Access can change hands, so last year's answer may not hold. For a change of water, Lac du Huard is 1.3 km distant. The position on Lac a Charles is worth confirming on the day.
