Overcast skies today, with a whisper of wind from the SSW and the barometer holding steady. Expect most activity at Lac Calamine around the first drop-off and weed lines. A stay-home graph, with the middle of the day as the one excuse to go. Downsize everything and pick the calmest water. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Set in Outaouais, Quebec, this is Lac Calamine. The bank is 286 metres above sea level. This is a pocket water of some 3 hectares, and every part of it is reachable from the bank. On size it sits at the modest end of our Outaouais list. Saint-Boniface at 38 km is the nearest place to stop. Further out sit Maniwaki (50 km) and Ferme-Neuve (59 km). It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
There is no published depth for this one, so start shallow and work out. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Survey and observation records for Outaouais include pumpkinseed, yellow perch, smallmouth bass and rainbow smelt. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. On Lac Calamine that means starting tight and working out.
Climate normals give 18°C for July and -16°C for January. The season turns properly here, and fish follow it closely. Hard water holds through the cold months, breaking up near late April. Average temperatures cross freezing around late April in spring and again near late November in autumn. September and October fish steadily right up to the freeze. That is the shape of the year on Lac Calamine.
We hold no note on access for this one. Public data shows nothing built here, so treat the whole approach as informal. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Parking is often the real limit rather than the bank itself. Keep proof of licence with you rather than in the car. Failing this one, try Lac Mamouth, 0.7 km away. What applies at Lac Calamine may have changed since it was mapped.
