Ontario splits cleanly in two, and the split decides everything about a trip. The northwest is Shield country: Kenora District holds more mapped water than any other in the province, with Thunder Bay District close behind and Algoma and Sudbury following, reached by highway, logging road or float plane and often hours apart. The settled south holds far fewer waters but puts every one within reach of a population centre, so Waterloo and Ottawa South both have mapped water inside 1 km and pressure concentrates hard. Almost all of the province's water is natural lake, with a set of bays along the Great Lakes shoreline that fish more like inland seas. Elevation barely varies, 1 to 634 metres, so what changes across Ontario is latitude and access rather than relief. Our Ontario coverage runs to 18,167 waters in 49 counties. Most of them are natural lakes, with rivers and creeks making up much of the rest. Lake Superior is the widest water we hold here, about 81,844 sq km. Lake Superior holds the deepest survey figure we have, near 406 metres. Cold months average -16°C; warm months reach 18°C. Ice-out most often lands around late April, though the north and south of the state differ.
