An even grey lid over the water, with hardly a ripple anywhere and the barometer holding steady. Start the search at Hale Lake along the calm side of the wind. Little to get excited about, though the middle of the day holds a sliver of promise. Downsize everything and pick the calmest water.

Hale Lake is one of the Cochrane District waters in Ontario. The surface lies 317 metres up. Around 13 hectares of surface means several distinct areas to work. A shoreline of some 1.7 km keeps the choices simple. Head to Hearst, 44 km away, for anything you forgot. Beyond it, Hornepayne at 62 km and Kapuskasing at 109 km. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.
No figure exists for depth, so let the water show you. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Cochrane District records list northern pike, yellow perch, white sucker, Iowa darter and logperch among the fish reported. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. Hale Lake responds to conditions more than to tactics.
In an average year July sits at 16°C and January at -18°C. Ice holds for a long stretch, so the open weeks matter more here than further south. The lid arrives early and lasts until roughly early May. Averages suggest open water from about early May through to roughly mid November. The strong weeks are the first after break-up and the last before the freeze. On Hale Lake that shapes the whole year.
We hold no note on access for this one. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Nothing formal is recorded here: no ramp, no car park, no marked path. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. Check whether bait restrictions apply before you buy any. Rush Lake sits 8.1 km off and takes the overflow. For Hale Lake, the notice at the access point is the final word.
