Dull, settled light over the water, with a faint W drift and pressure sitting still. Give reed fringes and open pockets the first hour at Kalsas Lake. Numbers are low everywhere; the middle of the day is the pick of them. Take the small wins and call it early if it dies. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

You will find Kalsas Lake in Algoma, Ontario. It stands 311 metres above sea level. This is sizeable water at about 1.93 sq km, and a boat opens up most of it. At about 6.3 km of edge, most people work one arm at a time. On our Algoma list it sits near the top for size. For a base, Hornepayne sits 56 km out. Further out sit Hearst (58 km) and Kapuskasing (116 km). The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
Depth here is unknown, so count the lead down before committing. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Open biodiversity records for Algoma list walleye, northern pike, Iowa darter and yellow perch. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. Anyone new to Kalsas Lake should walk it once before setting up.
Typical July readings run about 16°C; by January the average is down near -18°C. Long winters and short summers set the pattern. Winter locks it down, and early May brings it back. On the long-run averages the water opens up around early May and starts locking again about mid November. Reckon on open water from spring through to late autumn, with May and June the strongest. That is the shape of the year on Kalsas Lake.
No access rule appears in what we hold. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. The map shows no ramp or car park nearby, so this is a walk-in water. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. A landowner's word beats anything printed elsewhere. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. The nearest alternative is Little Kalsas Lake, 2.4 km out. None of that is settled for Kalsas Lake in what we hold.
