A closed sky with even light today, with a useful W wind pushing food about with the glass holding level. Activity on Rush Lake should centre on the margins and the shelf beyond them. A hard day on paper; the evening edges the rest. Lower the pace and stay patient. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Rush Lake belongs to Cochrane District, Ontario. It stands 308 metres above sea level. Around 58 hectares of surface means several distinct areas to work. The whole outline is near 4.6 km, and most of it is walkable. For supplies, Hearst is 51 km out. Hornepayne follows at 54 km, then Kapuskasing at 117 km. No boundary runs near, so the local rules hold throughout.
We hold no survey for this water; read the slope of the shoreline instead. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Fish documented in Cochrane District include northern pike, yellow perch, white sucker, Iowa darter and logperch. It is the county picture; the agency list is water-specific. At Rush Lake the water rewards a slow, careful approach.
The year swings from about -18°C in January to roughly 16°C in July. Little of the calendar is open water, so timing counts for everything. Break-up comes around early May, and the run that follows is short and strong. Expect the water usable from around early May until roughly mid November. Early summer and early autumn carry the open-water season. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Rush Lake.
There is no clear statement anywhere on who can fish it. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. There is no mapped parking or launch close by, which usually means walking in. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. For a change of water, Janus Lake is 2.1 km distant. Where Rush Lake is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
