An even grey lid over the water, with the surface near flat and the barometer holding steady. The water to cover at Waboose Lake is the seam between weed and open water. If you must go, go in the morning. Treat it as a scouting trip with a rod in hand. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Waboose Lake falls in Cochrane District, part of Ontario. It sits at 278 metres above sea level. This is a pocket water of some 4 hectares, and every part of it is reachable from the bank. On size it sits at the modest end of our Cochrane District list. The nearest town is Hearst, 31 km away. It is 393 km to Greater Sudbury, the nearest city. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
Depth here is unknown, so count the lead down before committing. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Records held for Cochrane District cover northern pike, yellow perch, white sucker and Iowa darter. The county list is broader than any single water. Treat Waboose Lake as a water to read rather than to cover.
Between January at about -18°C and July at about 16°C, the water has a wide range to work through. This is a two-season water: locked, then wide open. After early May the shallows warm and the fish move up. From about early May to around mid November, expect open water on the long-run figures. September and October fish steadily right up to the freeze. The season on Waboose Lake follows the weather closely.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. Access points are not mapped for this water, which suits people who like quiet. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Sort the permit out before you load the car. Check whether bait restrictions apply before you buy any. Should this one be busy, Horsey Lake is 1.5 km off. Check the position on Waboose Lake before loading the car.
