Eight Lake in Thunder Bay District: How and When to Fish It

• Overview

  Eight Lake is one of the Thunder Bay District waters in Ontario. The water sits 363 metres up. This is a pocket water of some 5 hectares, and every part of it is reachable from the bank. It is one of the smaller waters we list in Thunder Bay District. The closest town, Greenstone, is 18 km away. After that come Geraldton at 32 km and Longlac at 60 km. This one is safely inside the county line.

• Where to Fish on Eight Lake

  We hold no depth figure for this one. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Fish documented in Thunder Bay District include cisco, blackfin cisco, rainbow smelt, bloater and shortjaw cisco. The list covers the county rather than this water alone, so treat it as a guide. Work Eight Lake in sections rather than trying to cover it.

• Seasonal Patterns

  Long-run averages give July about 16°C and January about -20°C. Water stays cold even at the height of the year. Count on hard cover from midwinter, and open water from early May. Climate averages put the opening at about early May and the closing near mid November. The middle of summer slows a little, with dawn and dusk carrying it. It holds true on Eight Lake more years than not.

• Tackle & Baits

  Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. The map shows no ramp or car park nearby, so this is a walk-in water. Keep the gear simple: light line, small hooks, split shot and a couple of proven lures. Where a permit is needed, the nearest town usually sells it. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. Little Lapierre Lake at 1.8 km is the sensible second choice. None of that is settled for Eight Lake in what we hold.
