Rain colouring the margins today, with a busy WNW wind on the open water with a settled glass. Start the search at Hipel Lake along the seam between weed and open water. A slow day overall; the night is the best of a quiet lot. Scale down and fish slowly. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Within Thunder Bay District, Ontario, you have Hipel Lake. The bank is 344 metres above sea level. The water covers some 80 hectares, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. The edge covers about 8.0 km, enough to hold several distinct areas. The nearest town is Greenstone, 12 km away. Then Geraldton, 28 km, and Longlac, 57 km. Rules here are straightforward: one set of provincial rules.
Depth is unmeasured here, so let the shoreline guide you. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. County-wide records name cisco, blackfin cisco, rainbow smelt, bloater and shortjaw cisco. Read it as a county summary, not a water-by-water list. Take Hipel Lake a stretch at a time.
Long-run averages give July about 16°C and January about -20°C. Winter owns most of the year at this latitude. Break-up comes around early May, and the run that follows is short and strong. On average, early May opens the water and mid November closes it again. Fish feed hardest at the start and the close of the open season. At Hipel Lake the season follows that pattern closely.
There is no clear statement anywhere on who can fish it. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. One rod, a handful of hooks and floats, and a few small lures are enough for this water. Local rules can differ across the county line, so check where you stand. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. Tigerlily Lake sits 3.3 km off and takes the overflow. None of that is settled for Hipel Lake in what we hold.
