Cloud from horizon to horizon today, with a steady WNW wind with a settled glass. Whatever swims in Flute Lake should be near the shaded margin through bright spells. Numbers are low everywhere; the night is the pick of them. Scale down and fish slowly. The season of moving fish: stay mobile and watch for bait.

Flute Lake belongs to Thunder Bay District, Ontario. It lies 343 metres above sea level. At about 61 hectares, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. About 3.8 km of bank, so nothing stays unexplored for long. Supplies mean a trip to Greenstone, 22 km off. The nearest city of size is Thunder Bay, 217 km away. There is no boundary nearby to worry about.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Fish documented in Thunder Bay District include cisco, blackfin cisco, rainbow smelt and bloater. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. On Flute Lake the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
Between January at about -20°C and July at about 16°C, the water has a wide range to work through. The ice season is long here and the open one short. Look for the thaw near early May; the fishing lifts straight after. On average, early May opens the water and mid November closes it again. Fish feed hardest at the start and the close of the open season. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Flute Lake.
The access position is unclear from public sources. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. There is no mapped parking or launch close by, which usually means walking in. Keep the gear simple: light line, small hooks, split shot and a couple of proven lures. A landowner's word beats anything printed elsewhere. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. The nearest alternative is Piccolo Lake, 1 km out. Rules at Flute Lake are worth checking on the day.
