Low, flat cloud sitting over the water, with a persistent wind from the W and pressure going nowhere. The fish at Big Deer Lake are likely to sit near the margins and the shelf beyond them. Quiet conditions all day, with the evening marginally better. Scale down and fish slowly.

Big Deer Lake falls in Parry Sound District, part of Ontario. It sits at 290 metres above sea level. At some 1.68 sq km it is far too large to cover on foot in a day. Shoreline length is close to 16 km, and each section fishes a little differently. It ranks high for size among our Parry Sound District listings. For a base, South River sits 29 km out. For a city, Greater Sudbury is 125 km off. This one is safely inside the county line.
Depth is not on record here, which means reading the ground instead. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Fish documented in Parry Sound District include smallmouth bass, pumpkinseed, yellow perch, northern pike and rock bass. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. Big Deer Lake gives up more to patience than to distance.
Expect July to average close to 18°C, with January the cold end at about -11°C. Winter shuts things down for a spell, then spring reopens them fast. Hard cover is dependable here; it goes around late April. Averages suggest open water from about late April through to roughly early December. Early summer and early autumn carry the open-water season. Time your trip to Big Deer Lake by conditions rather than dates.
Nothing in our records says who may fish here. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Nothing formal is recorded here: no ramp, no car park, no marked path. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Provincial rules still apply whatever the bank status. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. Failing this one, try Lake of Many Islands, 4.6 km away. None of that is settled for Big Deer Lake in what we hold.
