A clear night sky over the water, with almost no wind to speak of with the glass holding level. Give the weed line and any gaps in it the first hour at Stickland Lake. A slow day overall; the morning is the best of a quiet lot. Go lighter and slower than usual. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Stickland Lake is set in Parry Sound District, Ontario. Pine and birch runs right down to the water. At about 23 hectares, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. The bank runs about 3.5 km all the way round, so one visit can cover most of it. Nearest town is South River, 25 km off. Greater Sudbury sits 122 km out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Open biodiversity records for Parry Sound District list smallmouth bass, pumpkinseed, yellow perch, northern pike and rock bass. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. The shape of Stickland Lake rewards a slow walk along one bank.
Climate normals give 18°C for July and -11°C for January. Fishing here follows the temperature more than the calendar. Break-up comes around late April, and the run that follows is short and strong. Climate averages put the opening at about late April and the closing near early December. Fish feed hardest at the start and the close of the open season. On Stickland Lake the same rules apply, with local timing.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. No built facilities appear in mapping around this water. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Take the rules with you rather than trusting memory. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. Should this one be busy, Hammond Lake is 0.8 km off. Where Stickland Lake is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
