Glare on the water under a clear sky, with light air out of the SE and steady pressure. On Fly Lake, work the first drop-off and weed lines first. A broad window opens from night into morning. Commit to the pattern once the first fish shows. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Fly Lake stands in Cariboo Regional District, British Columbia. Land around it is pine and birch. This is a pocket water of some 9 hectares, and every part of it is reachable from the bank. It is a small entry by Cariboo Regional District standards. For a base, 108 Mile Ranch sits 18 km out. Kamloops sits 154 km out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. No border sits close enough to matter.
Depth figures are not published for this one. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Across Cariboo Regional District, recorded fish include sockeye salmon, Chinook salmon, bull trout and Coho salmon. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. Read Fly Lake for ten minutes before the first cast goes out.
The seasonal spread runs -8°C to 14°C. Spring and autumn carry the fishing; summer and winter test it. Hard water holds through the cold months, breaking up near mid April. Break-up near mid April, freeze-up near mid November: that is the shape of an average year. From the thaw to midsummer the fishing improves week by week. It sets the rhythm of the year at Fly Lake.
We hold no note on access for this one. Mapping shows a campsite some 160 m from the water. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. A phone call first saves an afternoon. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. Should this one be busy, Sand Hill Lake is 2.9 km off. Check the position at Fly Lake before loading the car.
