Dull, settled light over the water, with the surface near flat with a settled glass. Duck Lake should fish best around the shallows early and the drop later today. The day fishes best from night into morning. Fish confidently and change only when the bites stop. The cold puts a premium on the calmest, deepest water.

Set in Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako, British Columbia, this is Duck Lake. The bank is 888 metres above sea level. With some 41 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. The bank runs about 4.7 km all the way round, so one visit can cover most of it. You are 43 km from Houston. Burns Lake follows at 72 km, then Telkwa at 77 km. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.
No figure exists for depth, so let the water show you. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. County-wide records name sockeye salmon, Coho salmon, Chinook salmon and pink salmon. Protected fish appear in the records for this area, so treat the list as information, not an invitation. At Duck Lake the first feature you find is worth twenty minutes.
Between January at about -9°C and July at about 13°C, the water has a wide range to work through. Hard water is a season in its own right here. Once it clears, about mid April, the fishing comes on quickly. Ice clears near mid April and comes back about mid November in a typical year. The strong weeks are the first after break-up and the last before the freeze. Duck Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
We have no record of the rules that apply on this bank. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Mapping shows an empty shoreline: no ramp, no jetty, no marked entry. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Provincial rules still apply whatever the bank status. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. Should this one be busy, Jewell Lake is 5 km off. What applies at Duck Lake may have changed since it was mapped.
