Drifting cloud with clear gaps tonight, with just enough NE wind to ripple the surface and pressure sitting still. The fish at Hill-Tout Lake are likely to sit near structure within a cast of the bank. A slow day overall; the evening is the best of a quiet lot. Lower the pace and stay patient.

Look for Hill-Tout Lake in the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako part of British Columbia. The ground around here is rolling bush. The water covers some 49 hectares, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. Some 6.4 km of bank gives room to move when the wind turns. Nearest town is Houston, 53 km off. Beyond it, Telkwa at 82 km and Burns Lake at 86 km. The nearest boundary is a fair way off.
No figure exists for depth, so let the water show you. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako records list sockeye salmon, Coho salmon and Chinook salmon among the fish reported. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. Hill-Tout Lake gives up more to patience than to distance.
Long-term averages put August at about 13°C and January near -8°C. Four clear seasons, with a proper winter at one end. Ice fishing carries the winter, and the water opens about late April. Average temperatures cross freezing around late April in spring and again near mid November in autumn. Reckon on open water from spring through to late autumn, with May and June the strongest. That is the shape of the year on Hill-Tout Lake.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Nothing formal is recorded here: no ramp, no car park, no marked path. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. Ask in the nearest town if you are unsure. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. Failing this one, try Tagetochlain Lake, 4 km away. Treat access at Hill-Tout Lake as something to verify.
