Full sun on the water today, with a kind SE breeze on the water with the barometer flat. Expect most activity at Tamarack Lake around windblown banks where food collects. Expect the better fishing from the day. Give the likely spots time before moving. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Tamarack Lake lies in Lac Ste. Anne County, in Alberta. The country here is pine and birch. At 6 hectares it is the sort of place you fish for an evening rather than a day. On size it sits at the modest end of our Lac Ste. Anne County list. Some 29 km away sits Barrhead, the nearest settlement. After that come Westlock at 40 km and Morinville at 42 km. The line between counties passes nearby, which can change who manages the water.
Depth is not on record here, which means reading the ground instead. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Reported across Lac Ste. Anne County: northern pike, walleye, white sucker, lake whitefish and yellow perch. Records at this level tell you what is in the area. Treat Tamarack Lake as a water to read rather than to cover.
The range across the year is -14°C to 16°C. Expect a real winter and a strong spring after it. Expect a solid lid for months and a thaw around late April. Averages place the thaw at late April and the freeze at mid November. Fishing peaks soon after break-up and again before the cold returns. Tamarack Lake fishes to that pattern most years.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Parking is often the real limit rather than the bank itself. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. Failing this one, try Nakamun Lake, 4.9 km away. Treat Tamarack Lake as unsettled until someone local tells you otherwise.
