A day shaped by the wind, with next to no ripple with the glass holding level. On Cranes Lake, work the margins and the shelf beyond them first. Little to get excited about, though the middle of the day holds a sliver of promise. Downsize everything and pick the calmest water. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Within County of Barrhead No. 11, Alberta, you have Cranes Lake. The bank gives way to rolling bush. At about 87 hectares, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. The outline measures near 5.6 km, so local knowledge counts. The town to know is Barrhead, 18 km out. Then Westlock, 32 km, and Morinville, 46 km. Being near a boundary, it pays to know which side you are fishing.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. County of Barrhead No. 11 records list northern pike, white sucker, brook trout, Iowa darter and perch among the fish reported. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. On Cranes Lake the quiet end is the one worth the extra effort.
Long-term averages put July at about 16°C and January near -14°C. The middle months are generous; the ends are demanding. The freeze runs deep into the year, with break-up near late April. Expect the water usable from around late April until roughly mid November. Just after the ice goes and just before it returns, the fishing lifts. Anyone fishing Cranes Lake regularly works to that calendar.
Our records carry no access rule either way. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Nothing formal is recorded here: no ramp, no car park, no marked path. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. Newton Lake at 5.4 km is the sensible second choice. Treat access at Cranes Lake as something to verify.
