A clear night sky over the water, with a light chop building from the NW with a settled glass. The water to cover at Star Lake is windblown banks where food collects. Make the evening the heart of the trip. Make the first hour count and build on it. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Star Lake is one of the Meeker County waters in Minnesota. Land around it is mixed forest. It measures some 591 acres, and wind has room to build across it. The perimeter runs near 8.4 miles, so plan the walk before you start. It is among the larger waters listed here for Meeker County. The closest town, Litchfield, is 5.7 miles away. Atwater follows at 10 miles, then Dassel at 14 miles. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Species logged across Meeker County include largemouth bass, walleye, northern pike, common carp and bluegill. The list covers the county rather than this water alone, so treat it as a guide. The near bank of Star Lake is often the one people ignore.
Temperature averages peak at 72°F in July and bottom out at 11°F in January. Four clear seasons, with a proper winter at one end. Ice is part of the season here, ending near early April. Averages suggest open water from about early April through to roughly late November. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. Star Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
No public source sets out the position on this bank. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Bank access can be seasonal on ground like this. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. Evenson Lake, 1.7 miles away, makes the obvious fallback. For Star Lake in particular, ask before you travel.
