An even grey lid over the water, with the water lying quiet as pressure slides. Whatever swims in Gardner Lake should be near bays that hold the day's warmth. The day holds up well from night into morning. Work the productive water thoroughly. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Look for Gardner Lake in Becker County, Minnesota. The setting is lake country bush on every side. With some 54 acres of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. About 1.4 miles of bank, so nothing stays unexplored for long. It is high ground by Minnesota standards. Park Rapids sits 21 miles from here and is the nearest stop. The nearest city of size is Fargo, 71 miles away. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. County-wide records name bluegill, largemouth bass, walleye and northern pike. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. Gardner Lake responds to conditions more than to tactics.
Expect July near 67°F and January near 4°F on the long-run figures. The year splits cleanly: hard water, then open water. Count on hard cover from midwinter, and open water from mid April. Ice usually gives way near mid April, and forms again about mid November. Fishing peaks soon after break-up and again before the cold returns. Gardner Lake fishes to that pattern most years.
Our records carry no access rule either way. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. The water borders Gardner Lake Wildlife Management Area, so reserve rules are likely to apply. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Some banks are open only from a marked point. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. For a change of water, Missouri Lake is 1.4 miles distant. None of that is settled for Gardner Lake in what we hold.
