Rain moving through today, with a soft ESE wind as pressure slides. Whatever swims in Kirk Lake should be near the seam between weed and open water. Expectations low today; if anything moves, it will be in the night. Lower the pace and stay patient. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

Look for Kirk Lake in the Becker County part of Minnesota. It stands 1,611 feet above sea level. It is high ground by Minnesota standards. The town to know is Park Rapids, 19 miles out. Fargo sits 75 miles out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. Round about: Augusta Lake roughly 0.7 miles, 0.9 miles out stands Bogus Lake, Horn Lake roughly 1 mile, 1.1 miles out stands Morrison Lake and Triplet Lakes roughly 1.2 miles. The boundary is near enough that local access rules are worth double-checking.
Our records hold no depth for this water. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Survey and observation records for Becker County include bluegill, largemouth bass and walleye. The list covers the county rather than this water alone, so treat it as a guide. On Kirk Lake the quiet end is the one worth the extra effort.
In an average year July sits at 67°F and January at 4°F. Cold locks it up for a good stretch each year. Ice is part of the season here, ending near mid April. From about mid April to around mid November, expect open water on the long-run figures. Reckon on open water from spring through to late autumn, with May and June the strongest. Plan any trip to Kirk Lake around it.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. You will be walking about half a mile from the nearest car park. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Where a permit is needed, the nearest town usually sells it. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. If the gate is shut, Augusta Lake at 0.7 miles is the nearest alternative. Check the current arrangement for Kirk Lake.
