Stars out and no cloud tonight, with mild air moving in from the WNW and no real change in pressure. Expect most activity at Cascade Lake around structure within a cast of the bank. The day holds up well from afternoon into evening. Let the water tell you when to move. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Cook County in Minnesota is where Cascade Lake sits. Around the bank it is lake country bush. About 470 acres, so local knowledge or a boat saves a lot of walking. With 7.0 miles or so of shoreline, boat anglers cover ground the bank cannot. Few waters listed in Cook County are bigger. For supplies, Grand Marais is 16 miles out. Then Silver Bay, 49 miles, and Ely, 57 miles. No border sits close enough to matter.
The basin has been measured to about 20 feet. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Fish documented in Cook County include white sucker, yellow perch and northern pike. The county list is broader than any single water. Fish Cascade Lake to its features, not to its size.
Temperature averages peak at 63°F in July and bottom out at 6°F in January. Spring and autumn carry the fishing; summer and winter test it. After late April the shallows warm and the fish move up. Climate figures give an open season running late April to mid November. June through September is the settled part of the year, with the shoulders busier for fish. Anyone fishing Cascade Lake regularly works to that calendar.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. A carry of half a mile from the nearest parking is the price of fishing here. Facilities run to toilets half a mile from the water. Bank access can be seasonal on ground like this. Access can change hands, so last year's answer may not hold. If the gate is shut, Tomash Lake at 1.1 miles is the nearest alternative. For Cascade Lake, the notice at the access point is the final word.
