Uneven cloud over the water after dark, with just enough WNW wind to ripple the surface and pressure on the rise. On Babble Lake, work the shallows early and the drop later first. Block out the hours from afternoon into evening. Cover water early, then settle where the signs are. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Look for Babble Lake in Cook County, Minnesota. The surface lies 1,844 feet up. This is a pocket water of some 21 acres, and every part of it is reachable from the bank. It is high ground by Minnesota standards. The town to know is Grand Marais, 15 miles out. After that come Silver Bay at 49 miles and Ely at 58 miles. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
Our records hold no depth for this water. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Across Cook County, recorded fish include white sucker, yellow perch, northern pike and rainbow trout. What holds for the county may not hold for this water. Fish Babble Lake to its features, not to its size.
The seasonal spread runs 6°F to 63°F. A solid cap is the normal state through winter. The open season starts with the thaw, near enough late April. On the long-run averages the water opens up around late April and starts locking again about mid November. The shoulder weeks of the open season are the productive ones. On Babble Lake that shapes the whole year.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. No made access is recorded, so a short walk in is the likely arrangement. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Season dates differ by species, so read the table. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. For a change of water, Cascade Lake is 1.2 miles distant. Nothing on Babble Lake should be assumed from this page alone.
