Blue sky from bank to bank today, with almost no wind to speak of and pressure on the rise. Most of the action on Stafford Lake should come off points where shallow meets deep. A long productive spell runs afternoon into evening. Make the first hour count and build on it. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Stafford Lake is one of the Kent County listings for Michigan. The surface lies 673 feet up. At roughly 15 acres, the whole thing is within casting reach of a single walk. It is low-lying compared with other Michigan water we list. Start from Walker, 3.2 miles down the road. The big place round here is Grand Rapids, 6.2 miles distant. Rules can differ a short way off, since the county line is near.
There is no recorded depth, so work from what you can see. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Species logged across Kent County include bluegill, rock bass, johnny darter, largemouth bass and black crappie. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. Treat Stafford Lake as a water to read rather than to cover.
July is the warm end of the year here, averaging about 71°F, while January sits near 23°F. Expect a real winter and a strong spring after it. Winter fishing happens on the ice here, with open water back around late March. Going by climate averages, expect open water from about late March until roughly mid December. Early summer and early autumn carry the open-water season. The season on Stafford Lake follows the weather closely.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. The slipway at Public Launch is half a mile away. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. Where tickets apply, they are sold in the nearest town rather than on the bank. Round Lake, 0.4 miles away, makes the obvious fallback. None of that is settled for Stafford Lake in what we hold.
