Low, flat cloud sitting over the water, with a decent S wind working the banks and no real change in pressure. Give structure within a cast of the bank the first hour at Lac Y. Save your energy for the morning. Let the water tell you when to move. The season of moving fish: stay mobile and watch for bait.

Lac Y is one of the Capitale-Nationale waters in Quebec. The setting is spruce and muskeg. Surface area runs to about 4 hectares — small enough to read in one session. By elevation it is in the upper part of our Quebec listings. Laurentides sits 28 km from here and is the nearest stop. La Cité-Limoilou sits 80 km out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. The nearest boundary is a fair way off.
No figure exists for depth, so let the water show you. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Species logged across Capitale-Nationale include lake sturgeon, Atlantic sturgeon, longnose sucker, sauger and channel catfish. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. On Lac Y that means starting tight and working out.
July is the warm end of the year here, averaging about 17°C, while January sits near -16°C. This is a two-season water: locked, then wide open. Ice-out usually falls in early May, and the weeks after it fish hardest. Averages suggest open water from about early May through to roughly mid November. Look to early summer and the first cool weeks of autumn. The season on Lac Y rarely departs from it.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. Access is unmapped, which usually means a farm track and a walk. Walleye come to jigs worked slow near bottom, and to trolled crankbaits along the drops at dusk. Parking space is the usual limit rather than the bank itself. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. Lac du Barbet, 1.3 km away, makes the obvious fallback. The position on Lac Y is worth confirming on the day.
