Heavy overcast holding through the day, with a whisper of wind from the SSW with the barometer flat. Start the search at Lac Scalpel along reed fringes and open pockets. A stay-home graph, with the middle of the day as the one excuse to go. Downsize everything and pick the calmest water. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Night
Outaouais in Quebec is where Lac Scalpel sits. This is pine and birch country. At 4 hectares it is the sort of place you fish for an evening rather than a day. It is a small entry by Outaouais standards. Nearest place of any size is Saint-Boniface, 62 km away. Ferme-Neuve is 70 km and Maniwaki 75 km. Rules here are straightforward: one set of provincial rules.
Depth is not on record here, so the bank has to tell you. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Outaouais records list pumpkinseed, yellow perch, smallmouth bass, rainbow smelt and Iowa darter among the fish reported. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. Treat Lac Scalpel as a water to read rather than to cover.
Averages move between -17°C in January and 18°C in July. Expect a real winter and a strong spring after it. The open season starts with the thaw, near enough late April. Open water usually runs from late April until about late November. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. At Lac Scalpel the season follows that pattern closely.
Our records carry no access rule either way. No made access is recorded, so a short walk in is the likely arrangement. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Rules differ from one water to the next round here. Keep proof of licence with you rather than in the car. Should this one be busy, Lac Hile is 1 km off. Nothing here settles the position at Lac Scalpel for certain.
